Is anyone looking forward to the release of Lindows, and what do you think the outcome will be from a Lindows vs. Windows aspect..

i think it might be good for people who can't let go fully of windows programs, newbies.. but that is all if its stable and works correctly, which i doubt at first.. also, there will most definitly be limited support for windows apps in lindows, as most likely the software vendor won't support it and i doubt lindows will be able to support every known windows app.
truly to say, i don't think it will catch on.. it might stick around awhile, but my prediction tells me it won't work out.

oh, after reading an article about it at www.newsforge.net , looks as if it is going to cost 100 dollars per single user.. that doesn't sound like its gonna save people money.. hopefully they will have it downloadable for free. also to get into their insiders site, to discuss the product and OS, they want a 99 dollar membership fee... which doesn't garantee you software to test or use... what a rip off. 99 bucks to talk about something and discuss something you can't even use interactively...

i truly have my doubts about it now...

i kinda doubt that lindows will take off... unless they can get the major progs working flawlessly, aol, office, ect... it's not going to go anywhere.

don't really see the niche presonally. obviosuly there's a purpose behind it, but being a totally comercial venture, it'll have no backing from the open source community, and the other part of users are M$ bods... who would generally never EVER use anything but windows, if nothign else simply goes they're unaware of it. They don't have an audience imo.

Lindows? Never heard of it till now. Interestink concept, but as most have voiced, I doubt it'll go anywhere. Number 1, you can buy Windows for less than the 100 bucks it's going to cost and you at least get support (for what it's worth). =) Number 2 the 99 dollar membership fee will put even more people off if that's the only way to get support. 3? I suppose would be the fact that if they want Windows and Linux, they can get it free by using a decent distro like Peanut or the like. Sounds to me like they are trying to steal the Linux community of it's work and put it together as a Windows hybrid in order to explain why they are charging you up the arse... No danke...

I think that their reasoning is that it'll "bring the two communities together". And I really don't think that it's gonna happen. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice idea, but the Windows users will want all the fancy Windows XP type things, and for it to do everything for them, and the Linux users will want (for the most part) to get their hands dirty, so to speak, and do thing like upgrade the kernel. Now forgive me for thinking this, but if they are actually managing to get software to run successfully under what is really a Linux system in disguise, wouldn't the talents of all the Lindows programmers be more worthwhile being put to use on such things as the WINE project, rather than trying to re-invent the wheel?

Surely a good distro with a great WINE is much more attainable than a mediocre 'distro' with an mediocre WINE built-in.

I think they're trying to create a niche for themselves, when, at the end of the day, they'll find that that niche doesn't exist. It's called evolution and ecology, and many, many species have fallen the same way this piece of software will.

Sorry for the ranting, I've just been doing some stupidly hard microbiology coursework and my brain is now soup.

Now THAT'S a great idear! And in fact you are quite right in your wise observation of it being Linux in disguise. It'll be just like Linux with killer Win support. They really should wake wine up a little and get it going, although I still think they want the money in the end... :(

I would say this company is already using wine to aid it development.

I can just say one word: vapourware.

I dont think we will every see a stable release from these idiots and if we do then i seriously doubt it will do well. not at a hundred dollars. thats just funny that is.

Win4Lin, Wine, or VMWare is a lot cheaper than that program that can cost over 200. When I learn more about Linux I will try installing VMWare so I can use all my software that was design for MS OS under Linux.

yeah i signed up.. that was when i thought it'd be free, and we'd get to test cool stuff...

Same confuse arised when windows got first introduce to APPLE users.
