Limiting Processor Use to a Process

Hi,

I'm using Fedora 15, 64 bit, and have realized that for a half hour each night, when I back up the system, (it's used as a database server), gzip (which I'm using to zip the archives) gobbles up inordinate amounts of CPU - enough to make the database itself inaccessible from other machines.

So, I'm just wondering, is there a way that I can limit the resources that gzip (or whatever) consumes, such that it doesn't have such an adverse effect on other services?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You might look at "nicing" it.

Read the nice man pages first (man nice in a terminal will bring them up). The nice command is a little counter-intuitive--more (+) nice means less priority.
