LILO won't install

I am trying to install Mandrake 7.0 on a 40G drive, but LILO won't install. It tells me that its too far into the drive (>1024) or some such. What's the deal? Is it impossible to add a Linux partition (I've got 30G for W, so that leaves about 10 for L) on larger drives and have LILO add itself to the MBR of the main Windows partition?

What kind of computer do you have? (what year)

If it's a recent one (1998+) there should be no problem, and you can just install LILO, regardless of what it says. Maybe you have to add the lines
lba32
boot=/dev/hda
at the beginning of the file /etc/lilo.conf, before running lilo.

And keep your resque disk at hand!.

good luck!

AMD K6-2 400mhz Pc, 320 RAM, Windows Me. I'm installing from the CDROM(7.0 Delux). I can run the installation, partition and format the end of the disk for Linux, but LILO will not install. It won't run past that point either. I can shut down and restart the system, but without LILO, it just boots to Windows Me. If what you say is correct, I should be able to install LILO onto the MBR of the main partition of hda where Windows resides, but is that possible from Windows, or do I need to do a Linux boot from disk?

There are older versions of Lilo that were subject to a 1024 cylinder limitation. That's what you are seeing.

You can try to get a newer version of Lilo, but you may be also better off getting a new distro. The kernel and the packages in Mandrake 7.0 are all a bit long in the tooth.

Guess I'll have to check the local distributers, cause my dial-up hasn't yet reached the 21st century. (56K :( ).
Thankx for the quick responses.

You could download lilo, or another boot manager. Search for one on google.

Will this work? Can I do an install of this version and add LILO after?

jglen490 10-22-2002 07:18 AM

Yes, that should work well.

I broke down and purchased 8.2 Powerpack. I'm hoping that should solve the problems.

I'm sure that Mandrake thanks you!! There are, for future reference, any number of GPL resellers who will sell you a set of CDs for nearly any Linux distro for next to nothing.
