LILO Video Adapter error

Hey there,

Although I have been able to boot into Slackware onto KDE from my usb boot disk, I still keep getting this error when attempting to install/configure LILO. I took some photos to show the exact error.

This first image is when I attempted to install LILO during Slackware installation.

This, of course, on KDE.

Would anyone know what really is the problem here? I have put LILO on the MBR (dev/hda), as I had Windows XP first installed, but through System Configuration I get the same image [shown above in pic #2] when editing the .conf to change the boot sector to my Linux partition (dev/hda2).

As for trying to get back into Windows, I can get a Windows Setup Disk and remove LILO from the MBR? Because right now, I can't boot into Windows since LILO won't start up. I'll get an error after BIOS loading that there is an error loading an operating system.

Hi,

And welcome to LQ!

Can you please tell us what type your graphics adapter is?

When you're booting into KDE, open a konsole and copy the
output of
Code:
lspci | grep -i vga
As for the second error message - you've duplicated a
section (which isn't a problem in itself), but you need
to give the copy a *different* label.

Cheers,
Tink

Update: This is great! I finally got it fixed. I had to do my editing directly to the .conf rather than using the other tabs in System Configuration -> LILO. Even trying to change just the label, I would get the error again. Thanks again for your answer about changing the labels, though. When done automatically after selecting Probe, all Linux kernels were given the same label, so I thought that was normal at first.

Hey, thanks for the welcome.

This is the text output I received:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AQ [Radeon 9600]

I will note that I have just installed the latest graphics driver from ATI.

I've made some changes to the lilo.conf - edited the labels and marked the check on Windows's partition table to be ignored, and got the following OK message.

I rebooted the comp, and LILO did come up. However, having selected to boot Windows, it has been stuck at a text screen saying:

boot: NT
Loading NT

I've left that comp on for the last 10 minutes and it's still stuck on that. I know my Windows partition is there as I can access its data from Linux.

Glad to hear you're making progress!

To assist you with the Windows-boot problem we'll need to know
more about how you did the partitioning/resizing and the likes
to get space for Linux, whether the drive changed e.g. from
primary to secondary since windows was installed ...

Cheers,
Tink

Oh all is well now. I am able to boot into both Windows or Linux from LILO. I used GParted to make room for the Linux partition.
