LILO problem

I have Corel Linux installed on my Pentium II computer with an IDE hard drive (2 gb im gonna put a bigger one in with it once i get linux to work) whenever I boot my system it says LI_ and then stops and I don't know what this is caused by can anyone please help

did you create a rescue disk? you need to reconfigure lilo and to do that you need your rescue disk when you first installed Linux.

let us know before i go any further.

yes i do have a rescue disc

trickykid 07-15-2001 04:11 PM

you'll want to boot with your rescue disk and then check out your /etc/lilo.conf file... see if everything checks out okay... then you can try running /sbin/lilo at the command and reboot to check to see if it works or not.

not sure of or if you lilo is okay, post the contents of lilo.conf here and we can check it our for you.

I can tell you why it happened. the LI boot prompt happens when the second stage bootloader loads, but it cannot run. Did you NOT rerun /sbin/lilo after you changed a kernel (If you DID change a kernel). Did you use /sbin/lilo incorrectly if you created a new boot map? Then again, you could have a corrupted MBR. Or you may have installed LILO in a swap partition (which should be impossible). You might be missing a kernel image in /ect/lilo.conf. Either way, you must do what trickykid said and reconfigure lilo.

The hard drive was going bad so i just installed it on a diff drive and it now works thanks for responding the best thing about linux is the amount of people who are willing to take the time to tell you how to fix your computer and thats one of the main things that got me to use linux
