Are Windows XP and Linux on the same physical harddisk? If not, Windows XP would have written to the MBR of the drive that you installed it to. You can probably go into your BIOS and look for Boot Sequence or something similar. Change the harddisk to the one that you installed Windows XP to. My BIOS let's me choose anywhere between HDD-0 through HDD-3 for instance.

For some reason, this time when I ran fdisk and rewrote the MBR, it worked. I don't know what was going on. Maybe in the dark, I was hitting some key other than "Y" (I had to press Y or my bios wouldn't let the MBR to be written, any other key cancelled it.)
