LILO Config Problem - Goes straight to windows!

I use Mandrake 9.2 with kernel 2.4.xx. I edited my LILO Config file so that it would boot to windows by default (this is because some of my family cannot get out of Linux if it boots to that after the 10 second-countdown). I changed it so that if nothing was touched, it would boot Windows after the 10 second-countdown. At least that is what I expected to happen, but that isn't what happened.

Now, I don't even see the LILO options menu, instead it boots straight to Windows. Problem - I CAN'T CHOOSE LINUX!! (ARGHH!!! )

What do I have to do to enable that boot menu again so that I can have windows as the primary OS that boots if nothing is pressed, but so that it still shows in order to be able to choose linux if i want??

Thanks a lot, Tom

in your /etc/lilo.conf

Try to boot with your install cdrom or boot disk
there must be an option like:

root=/dev/hda2

or wich drive your linux is installed on.
With this thingy you should be able to get back to your linux 8)

I use Slackware so I dunno how this is done with Mandrake ...

So if you got it back and logged in as root
edit the /etc/lilo.conf with your favorite editor like vi or whatever.

add:

prompt

to get the menu to choose
try a man lilo to get more info 9)

after editing you should run:

lilo -v

if there is no error it shall be working

I think you can boot from your original linux install cd ( Make sure "boot from CD" is enabled in your BIOS) and then choose "Linux rescue" to reinstall lilo. Once you have reinstalled lilo, make sure that it boots linux by default, then take it from there,

do you have a boot floppy of ur mandrake 9.2 version.or bootable cd
it will ask for boot from cd
boot: =/dev/hda(number)
number means ur partition number in which you have linux.
login as a root
type lilo if it gives you any error message like
unexpected arguement :'
go to vim /etc/lilo.conf
go to the last line
check if anything is changed.

Does it load Windows straight up or after giving you a black screen for 10 seconds???

Same happend to me.. Windows loads after giving me a black screen of 10 seconds (default timeout). Then I realised that boot menu is just invisible. So withing that 10seconds black screen I press down arrow once and hit enter. This chooses Linux and everything is cool....

ok, tried the rescue thing through the boot cd. re-installing lilo didnt work. i can mount my images, but at the boot prompt =/dev/hda5 didnt work i still cant get into linux. might try editing lilo.conf, i can get a command line. not sure of best proggy (vi???) or commands.also a point worth noting, is that i can only find lilo.conf under /mnt/etc/lilo.conf, rather than /etc/lilo.conf. why is this???
