hey i want to leave a term window open that is live and tells me cpu usage, % idle, memory usage and such just like top but without listing all the processes. i kno there's gkrellm, but i don't want the graphical bars and wutnot. is there anything that looks, well basically, just like the top portion of top. i kno i could just resize the window but top tries to adjust and it ends up squishing the catergory titles at the bottom and i don't want that either. thanks guys

well, u could use some options given in the top man page.
if u dont mind seeing just one process in the list, then
as top is running, hit 'n', and enter '1' - 0 is unlimited, which isnt what ur lookin for. with this ull have ur stats, and just 1 process shown. and u can save this setting too.

hope thats ok with u?

or when you open top, hit :
f
and then deselect everything in the page that appears...
note:if there is a start (*) by the option, that means it will show, so if you type the corresponding letter next to everything, so that no stars are showing, then all you'll get is the upper part of top with cpu percentage etc..
or open top and hit:
i
and that will remove all zombie and idle processes, which is the majority what is outputted from top,so it'll only show like 3 or so processes depending on what your running...which is better than the default output..

ok, instead of just 1, just hit enter after "n".
it shows only the stats then with no process listing.

:)
