Unhappy LibreOffice Writer documents open nomrally; Can't open FOLDERS

My Op. System for the past 2 years or so is Linux Mint Maya 13 Mate.

I'm using the Locate function on the Panel (Indicted by a drawing of a
magnifying glass)

If I have chosen to pick a file which is an ordinary text file (i.e.,
it is not a FOLDER) clicking on the name of the ordinary text file immediately opens the file.

BUT---for the past two days---if I seledct a FOLDER to Open and click on
either "Open" or "Open Folder" the Folder will NOT open.

Not every time, but sometimes, clicking on a FOLDER will produce the outline on the screen which usually opens as a Folder screen is opening---that brief attempt to open a folder screen lasts a half-second and then it disappears and the Folder does not open. No information is contained in that very brief appearance of the outline of a Folder Opening screen.

I hve used the Search function here in Linux Newbies but find no solution among several "can't open Folders" threads.

I have no idea how this happened.

In essence it cripples my customary daily opening up many different Folders
in a day since I simply can not open ANY Folder. I can open non-folder ordinary text fies as usual

I dont know how to "add Tags." ---nor their purpose.

Thanks for any advice re a fix which you may offer.

William

I'm a bit confused here. Is this a problem with the Mate desktop or with LibreOffice? I use LibreOffice but don't see any "Locate function". I do see a "Find function" indicated by a pair of binoculars.

Thanks jdkaye for you reply.

I'm sorry but I don't know whether the problem lies in the real of the Mate desktop or the LibreOffice word processor.

Thanks jdKaye,

Bbut I don't know which system is at fault.
The find//locate/search function on the Panel of myinux Mint 13 Maya Mate Op. System is a magnifying glass---not a pair of binoculars.

So it sounds like a Mate issue. Is the magnifying glass visible when LibreOffice is not being used? If it is then I guess it would have nothing to do with LibreOffice.
You might want to look at some Mate documentation and see if a search function is mentioned.

I happen to have an LMDE live CD lying around which uses Mate as its DE. Yes indeed, Mate uses a magnifying glass as a symbol for searches in its menu. I don't really understand what you're trying to do well enough to offer any meaningful advice.

Unhappy How can I restore the ability to open FOLDERS?

goood monring Mr.jdkaye

We have strayed far, far away from my purpose in asking my original question.
I need to find out how to be able to open FOLDERS again.

Imagine that you had interest in a subject called Amateur Radio.
Over the years you created dozens of files (not Folders) for that subject.
But finally you decided that storing most of the files in a single folder would
be sensible. You named that FOLDER Amateur Radio"

Some of the other regular files, that is, NOT Folders were named:
Dipole Antenna and Yagi Beam Antenna Local Ham Club Meeting.

So thereafter when you wanted to look a some subject in the "Amateur Radio" Folder
you would do a search/find/locate and "Amateur Radio" Folder would come to the screen.

The opened Folder would display the names of all the files you had previously installed
in the parent Folder "Amateur Radio"

Now then, in the situation I'm trying to describe,
I can open any ordinary filre very easily by clicking on it.

But when I click a FOLDER, the FOLDER will not open.

We have strayed far, far away from the purpose of my original posting.

I still don't understand what you mean. Are these documents that you want to open with Libreoffice? Are you talking about searching for a document or opening a document. Do you want to look inside of a folder and see what files are contained therein? In that case you would use a file manager like Dolphin or Konqueror. You say,
Quote:
But when I click a FOLDER, the FOLDER will not open.
I don't know what you mean. What application are you using to "open the FOLDER". If "we have strayed far, far away..." it's because you are not being clear about what exactly you want to do and how you want to do it.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I regret that I posted my original question.

Obviously I have not been able to express my question clearly and also unable to respond clearly when asked what my intent was.

I apologize for taking up the time and space on this forumn.

I therefore am closing out this thread.

williamhf, the questions were from folks who want to help.

Let me suggest you post the exact steps of what you are clicking to open the files/folders, maybe like this:

Quote:
Open LibreOffice, click file-->open-->[dialog box opens]-->click directory "documents" and so on.
and maybe post a screenshot of the problem dialog, it might help get more useful responses.

If you are trying to do open something into LO from a file manager (or equivalent function), you can open a file in LibreOffice from a file manager, but you cannot open a directory in LibreOffice from a file manager.
