libqt4 package problem
 

Hello,

I'm running ubuntu 8.04. A day ago, I needed to install 'unetbootin' which allows for the creation of USB installs of linux. However unetbootin required the latest (or at least newer) version of libqt4. Synaptic would not allow me to upgrade (repository didn't have it), so I found the '.deb' packages on ubuntu's site and installed them with the Gdebi package manager (Synaptic would not open the packages -presumably as they were newer?). Regardless, the install was successful and I was then able to run and use unetbootin. Today I tried to run 'skype' and received the following error:

I checked in Synaptic and it indicated that the old version of libqt4 was still installed. I am guessing that skype is somehow being confused by both being installed?

I attempted to remove the older packages with Synaptic, but it wanted to remove heaps of other programs if I removed the libqt4 and I don't want it to do that.

So my question is: how can I force the removal of the older libqt4 package without removing anything else?

welcome, Skype is confused by the new version that does not fit to the other parts of the library, not by the old one. The QT libraries are the base of KDE and most KDE-apps and they rely mutually on each other. So if you upgrade one of them you run into problems somewhere else. If you delete one of them you will see where it is missing soon and encounter a lot of problems...
Easiest solution is to upgrade to a newer ubuntu. Maybe someone can give you a workaround to get skype running but anyway your current configuration will cause trouble every now and then...

I did as suggested and upgraded. I had preferred to stick with 8.04 as it is the long term service release, however, I needed the functionality more.

I'm still curious if there is a way to force the removal of specific packages - I know that this can cause problems, but nothing ventured nothing gained.
