LFS & XFree86 4.2

Hi peoples,

Finally got myself an up and running LFS system...AWESOME!!!!
Iīm loving it! I have, however, one small rpoblem which really puts me off booting into my LFS sytem....

When trying to install X 4.2, my system hangs or crashes violently after about 30 to 40 minutes of compiling(a bit past the font injection part of the compilation.) It does this whether I chroot into my LFS system from SuSE, or whether I start up into my LFS natively... And Linux never ever hangs or crashes, so I know for a fact itīs the compilation. Has anybosy had similar problems or does ne1 have any sugestions for me to work around it? The annoying thing about Xīs compilation is that itīs makefiles donīt continue where they last stopped(ie duing hangs or crashes), so everytime my pc hangs and I reboot and I type make World, it starts all over again... Really pissing me off!!!!!

Also, another related question...

In the LFS book, it describes the installation of all the packages, and some of them are mentioned twice in different chapters (i.e. GCC). Should I install the packages which are mentioned twice the second time (after being able to boot into LFS) also? I didnīt think it would matter, but maybe it does..

Any help greatly appreciated....

Peace out

Hehe.. You know there is a LFS forum right... :p

Anyways, not sure exactly why its hanging or crashing like that. Have you tried redownloading XFree 4.2 and recompiling ? If that doesn't work, me personally would try maybe a pervious version and see if that does the same thing or not.. maybe 4.1 to test. Shouldn't be much difference just as long as 4.1 supports your video and monitor...

Also when it hangs, can you login into another ttys ? Like switch to ctrl-alt-F2 or does it just give you a hard lockup where nothing responds ??

Oh, I wasnīt aware. Can you post the link?

Iīm getting the classic Windows style total lockup, where the whole damn thing just freezes and reacts no longer.

I decided to start from scratch again, im going to follow a different approach, and keep chap. 5 and 6 seperatly (see the hint). This way i keep the static tree so if I have to reinstall it again i can just start at chap 5 1/2. Too bad, though, I had a nice bsd style init going and turned on and was starting to really administrate my computer my way. It was great for once to see linux boot up without seeing a bunch of failed modules or services. So ill just start over, (with the awesome bsd style init) now I know how t do it, so I guess itīll take a bit less time.

"Should I install the packages which are mentioned twice the second time "

The packages are linked statically the first time and dynamically the second time.
