Lenovo X60 Kubuntu Hardy not booting past login screen

So last night I'm just listening to some music when I decide to go to sleep. I shut down normally, and today I go to boot up, it hangs as soon as I enter my login credentials.

I'm not really sure what information I can post as I'm not even sure where to start. Any advice?

If it makes any difference, I used the mini iso file with an external cd drive to install hardy on the X60, and from command line installed Kubuntu-desktop. I also encrypted my drive with the command line install.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

If you get a grub menu, can you append 'single' to the invocation,
or do you have a menu entry for "safe mode" or something the like?

well at the kde login screen, i can choose a failsafe session.

or when grub boots up, i can hit esc and then go to (recovery).

right now im trying to figure out how to mount my encrypted /dev/sda5 in backtrack 3 livecd or knoppix livecd to copy data off the drive and go from there.

can only do so much with a few hours a night to tinker.
