Lenovo x220 tablet pc with ubuntu 12.04 Shutsdown and starts up unexpectedly

Hi

I bought a lenovo x220 tablet pc and installed ubuntu 12.04 with GNOME 3 a while ago.
It was working fine at first however recently:

1. the computer shutsdown unexpectedly, the shutdown dialog appears (the one that gives you the option of restart, cancel, or shutdown); I try to cancel it however the laptop would just power down (without going through the proper shutdown routine). Once it powers down it would try to reboot on its own but halfway during the reboot it would power down again.

2. At times when I do shutdown normally, I would just close the lid and the computer would start back up again.

In addition I dropped the computer on the battery side at one time and cracked the plastic casing a little. The above mentioned problems still exists when I use the laptop without the battery.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about finding out what's wrong and how to fix it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Usually it is the power/screen saver daemon, once inadvertently misconfigured it issues involuntary signals. Try to kill the daemon from the desktop configuration dialogs and use the laptop for longer time to observe whether the problem still recurs. Or if you can, try to examine the settings on power-saving and screen-saving daemons and make the necessary corrections.

Hope that helps.

Hi malekmustaq

thank you for the fast reply, I have jupiter installed on the laptop, and I had to unistall the gnome screen saver so that I could use the USMLE qbank client program.

I will kill the jupiter program and observe the computer; I'll get back to you.

Thanks again

So I've been observing the computer for a while, it seemed to be fixed, but just this morning I had the same problems again. I also noticed that when I shutdown the computer and close the screen the computer turns itself on, even a simple tap on the monitor seems to trigger the laptop to turn on by itself.

I also notice that before it turns on the wifi led lights up, I went into bios and turned off all wake on lan options but it didn't result in the problem going away.

Could this be a motherboard problem, or a boot up problem. A while ago I had ruined my GRUB boot loader but had it fixed using a live USB and bootrepair.

please help

thanks

Hey mate, i got this from the thinkwiki

Quote:
BugFix

It is a known problem for the X220 Tablet (other models may apply), that there is a problem concerning the CPU throttling in LINUX.

Syntoms vary for different kernels and distributions. Eg in ubuntu the CPU speed gets blocked at low rates and the computer becomes very slow until reboot, in Opensuse the entire desktop freezes (only mouse pointer working) and switching to console is not possible.
Solution is to disable the power management in the BIOS (at least disable BIOS CPU speed throttling). This has no major affect on battery life since the OS is still able to throttle the CPU when neccessary.
I know you're symptoms aren't there and you're running Ubuntu but the Wiki does say "Syntoms (lol 'symptoms') vary for different kernels and distributions". It doesn't say what version of Ubuntu it was refering to and that information may be obsolete now. I think you've got nothing to loose so why not give it a shot.
p.s.
i'm running the non-tablet x220, with the 9cell battery, i get about six hours of life doing browsing, how many hous do you get roughly?

So I disabled the CPU power management but I'm still experiencing the same problems.

on a side note;

I get a little over 4 hours when I'm in tablet mode taking notes whiles listening to music. And about 3 hours when I'm wathcing a video on the same tablet mode.
