I have a box acting as a load balance with three nics on lastest realease of Lenny with kernel 2.6.26-2-686. The system sometimes works fine but, other times when testing the connections I unplug the cable of one of the dsl lines and the system just freezes up. No logs, no errors, nothing. The only thing I notice is that the keyboard lights start blinking. When I check the logs, there nothing there to show. I have to run fsck when I repower the machine.
Does this happen when you unplug any dsl line or a specific one? The keyboard leads me to believe you have a hardware problem. The running of fsck is because the file system is not properly unmounting maybe due to the fact you might be using the case button instead of the shutting down linux normally.
You might check the configurations of your nic and the keyboard. There might be a conflict somewhere that is causing this. Hard thing about it is the randomness of the problem as you said.
