leaving xp for ubuntu troublr
As you will see i am very newbieish.
WhenI download the ubuntu iso dwnload to a computer file on my computer, I had to get a dvd disc rather than cd to have sufficient space. When i went to burn the file using microsoft, it did't work . It asked if it is a data file or a music file. I presume it is a data. Also do i need a converter to make the dvd accept an iso File. Thank you for your help and patience. So cloe to leaving gates stuff........... |
The file you downloaded is neither an audio nor a data file, it is an image. XP can by default not burn those images in an appropriate way, you will need to install third party software for that. Imgburn is free and reliable, install that and make sure that you burn the file as an image.

Thank you !!!!
You're going straight to heaven |
Welcome to the forums!
You will have a much nicer time with Ubuntu if you follow these direction step-by-step rather than guess: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop |
Dear snowpine;
Thank you for offering help but the page you reference does not offer a solution to the problem of how to download ubuntu as a file and ten be able to save it and burn it as an iso file. Hence my appeal to this forum. bvm |
I am absolutely 100% certain the link I posted DOES answer your question:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/deskt...dvd-on-windows If you don't like reading instructions, that's fine, lots of people like to learn through trial-and-error by plunging blindly ahead and then fixing their mistakes later. Hopefully you do not have any irreplaceable data on the machine and it is not necessary for business continuity. Have fun and good luck! :) |
Dear snowpine;
I meant no disrespect. As you advised, the info you provided does, it seem, offer the solution. I am very grateful and appreciative. I am off to see if i can follow instructions. I thank you bvm |
If snowpine is still reading

How big is your hdd?
You can resize your partitions to install ubuntu. Also there is an option to install ubuntu along side of wins. |
Before you can install Ubuntu, you have to make room for it. You need to shrink the WinXP partition. To do that:
Then you can begin to install Ubuntu. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy it! |

Here are some notes I wrote ages ago, when I first dual-booted XP and Linux:

I dont know what hardware you are running, but XP hardware isnt that fast or that new in most cases. Newer versions of ubuntu have much higher hardware requirements than 10.04, will use more RAM and run a fair bit slower than the older versions (they also use a unique, really annoying and stupid desktop). IMO you might be better off with Xubuntu 12.04 (which is still supported), or Linux Mint 13 using the Xfce or MATE desktops. |
