Learning Linux...Advice Needed
 

Hey everyone:

One of my goals this summer is to try and achieve some level of competency with Linux (specifically in the area of network administration). I'm planning on pursuing a second degree in Telecommunications (emphasis in Information and Telecommunication Management), and although I have a lot of experience with Windows and a basic knowledge of Linux, I think it would be beneficial to get some hands-on experience. Now I know I won't become an OMG LINUX GURU OMG without years of experience, but I mainly want to focus on the basics.

Now to the real question...I'm looking for advice on what distro/programs would be a good idea to get familiar with, as well as what sort of relatively cheap computer (under $300 preferably) I could put together/buy used to use as a sort of learning box. Also, if anyone has any good recommendations on books, feel free to suggest them.

For a computer, nearly anything that doesn't have a winmodem is probably reasonable. But you will probably do better to stay away from laptops since they often bring minor (or even major) annoyances with proprietary hardware standards that aren't fully supported. Most likely, the computer you're using to post this question would be adequate. Downloading Knoppix is a pretty good way to check.

As for books, the RUTE book linked in my signature as "RTFM" blows me away with how good it is. Some of the stuff in the first couple of sections may be skippable if you already have a solid background. The rest, you can pick and choose what you want to tackle, and you can go through the book and learn by doing. If you learn, say, half of it, you will be a guru by most peoples' standards.
