Learning Curve Too Steep

I am an older, competent, windows user who would love to migrate to Linux. Unfortunately there is no easy path. Linux seems to be a program written by geeks who want it to be different, forcing a windows user wanting to move over to completely learn a new way to use the internet. Even moving to Apple is easier. To learn Linux is like forcing us to learn Chinese from scratch. That will not happen.

Unless a pathway, or a bridge, which is "somewhat" like windows is provided so we can assimilate into this new OS called Linux, I, we, will never really accept Linux to replace Windows. Even though we want to get away from Windows, there is no way to do it, because Linux is just too different to easily learn. I can play with Linux, but that is all I can do - play with it, not use it on a daily basis.

And here we are, going to be forced to accept Windows 10 as the next OS, and I have nothing to say about it, for MS will soon kill Win7 like they killed XP, and force me to go to Win10, when I don't want to. I would love to use Linux, but the learning curve is just toooooo steep.

It would be nice to have a version which would make moving from Windows to Linux easy. The reality is, though, Linux is an OS for the younger geeks, or experienced programmer, not an OS for the avg user. Why can't that change? I realize this is an age old question, which has been around for years, but I'm realizing it is now becoming a reality I need to face.

You're doing it wrong.

If you don't like Windows or Linux, then use an OS from Apple.

You don't need to "learn" anything new as such.

Everything you know about windows has value to linux. You simply apply the concepts that you know. Do you know cut and paste? Sure you do. Same can be done in linux.

You can play with linux right now in various ways that won't interfere with windows.

Almost all major distro's offer live dvd/cd/usb. It is pretty easy to boot and try.

There are compelling reason's to stick with windows or mac if you wish also. Just do what is fun and easy for you. You may have a cell phone and had to learn it too. Kind of stinks learning phone, tv, car, computer, and so forth and so on each year. Just they way people make money I guess.

Linux is not harder than Windows, but it is different. Expect it to be different. And, remember, there was a learning curve to using Windows also; you just didn't notice it.

As for a distro to try, I would recommend Mint (I particularly like the MATE spin, but that's a matter of taste); they try to make their menus look similar to (not identical to) Windows menus. Once you find the menus, you can start and use the programs.

Going Linux is an excellent resource and About dot com has a good Linux section oriented to beginner and intermediate users.

We were all newbies once. I spun up my first Linux distro at age 55.

Try Zorin os. I've installed it on several peoples computers that had never used anything besides Windows. None of them had any problems.

PcLinuxOS is also a great first distro coming from Windows.

Pretty much all you have to do is click on things nowadays just like in Windows.

There is no Linux distro that will satisfy GyspyDan. He should happily "accept Windows 10 as the next OS" and never feel the need to post here again.

Cheer up man, your "soon" is like five years from now. Win7 is still alive and well.

The OP has been on this forum for 8 years. If he hasn't figured out Linux by now, then he just isn't trying.
If my dad can figure out Linux, anyone can.

That was funny. You're implying that moving to Apple is difficult, when Apple has put great effort and expense into making the transition easy.

GypsyDan, I don't get the point of your post. You are not asking a question here. If you have a specific question, post it here and people will happily help.

Nobody here (or anywhere else) actually minds whether or not you "accept Linux to replace Windows". It's your choice. Linux (originally Unix) was created by computer savyy people for computer savyy people. Although there now are distros out there that hold your hand almost like Apple / Microsoft does this is not how the system was designed to start with. The idea is to give the user the freedom to do what he wants. The idea is *not* to convince everyone to replace their windows with it.

The advantage is that, since Linux does not protect you from doing stupid things, it also does not stop you from doing clever things, like Windows / Apple do...
