Latin modern variants

Hi, I notice that the Latin Modern fonts are installed by default on Ubuntu 11.10, but I was wondering if anyone knew what the difference was in the variants? I can guess the difference between mono, roman and sans, but I have a whole lot of sub-variants, e.g. lmroman[x], where [x] is 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 17.

Cheers.

The figures 5 .... 17 are the font sizes, I guess.

I thought it might be related to that. The odd thing was I can find no references on the net. So perhaps they are optimised for displaying at that size? It also seems a bit strange to optimise it for "size", since 12 point on my display is different to 12 point on yours, which is different to 12 point on a letter, which is different to 12 point on a poster designed to be viewed from a metre away.
