this works for me:

# to back up:
$ dd if=/dev/sdb bs=4096 | bzip2 > fc11-live-usb.iso.bz2
# to restore:
$ bunzip2 -c fc11-live-usb.iso.bz2 | dd bs=32M of=/dev/sda & pid=$!
