Last Good Configuration?
 

Hello Guys,

Something very interesting to ask you guys !!
Do you remember playing with Windows System and the option "Last Good Configuration" .I remember those days when one of my friend activated that option on January 2004 and on September 2004 he corrupted the filesystem.He did something and brought the system working on January.He could see all the setting back and folders he created at that moment.

Mostly I see that Linux Sysadmin Like me who are very careless with their work tend to loose the data frequently.All I was thinking if this option is also there for we Linux Buddies...

Do let me know if any.

I think it would be great option to keep activate that option daily so that We can get back the system healthy.

I think this is called "maintaining a backup". There are many backup options available - which one is most appropriate for you needs will depend on your setup and/or business requirements.

As for Linux admins being more or less diligent in this regard than any other OS-specific admins... I don't have that experience.

What I guess is "Maintaining a backup" is different concept..Its There..But Its Somewhat related to SNAPSHOT I am talking about.

I agree about making backups.

Being careless however is a human problem.
No software can ever hope to compensate fully for the results of PEBKAC.
Address the cause, not the symptoms.


How reassuring is it to read a developer say "nor have I even used [programIDeveloped] personally" about his own work I wonder?..

I have never used "Flyback". Maybe it suits your purpose. Only you are able to test it and confirm it does.

Looks OK but a bit alpha maybe? But like I said before: maybe it suits your purpose, so you are the only one who is able to test and confirm it does...
Personally I think that In Backups We Trust. (and actually testing restores work fine ;-p)

You could always create an ISO of your present configuration and use that as your 'backup' ie: get all the applications just right and store your data on a separate drive/backup regularly. That way, if trouble occurs it is a simple install of your ISO and a bit of copying data.

What do you think of using something like puppet for configuration management?
