Large Virtual Desktops Available Under KDE?
 

I'm using SUSE 10.2, and the KDE that came with it.

I have to use a piece of software that opens a window far larger than my monitor resolution. It will not resize smaller. The troubles I'm having with the monitor resolution are in another thread.

Is it possible to instruct KDE to operate a virtual desktop large enough to accomodate this window, that I can scroll around, using my monitor as a window onto this alrger desktop?

I've had a root thruogh the KDE settings and I've scanned google but I can't find an answer. Surely this must be possible.

Try Control Centre - Desktop - Window Behaviour - Advanced - Enable active borders.

Just tried it - that's not quite what I'm after. That enables me to switch between desktops with the mouse; I need a way to make desktops bigger than my monitor, and use the monitor to pan across the desktop.

Can't that be configured in X configuration directly? Using "Virtual"?

I also recall once changing resolution (ctrl+alt+- and +) and noticed that after the resolution was smaller, the virtual desktop size still seemed to stay at the previous, higher resolution. Though I can't sure if I had the "Virtual" option defined at that time..haven't used it for a long time, so I'm sorry I can't advice more precisely on that. Last time I was hunting that option you are now was when I was trying to find out how to disable (or scale down so it "vanishes") the larger-than-screen virtual desktop..

You've tried using the modifier keys with mouse movements to manipulate the window without using its borders or title bar, right? Default bindings are to hold ALT and left-drag to move; right-drag to resize... that might be a reasonable workaround unless the window's size is fixed. If that is the issue, you can use KDE's window or application specific settings to change the initial geometry of the window... maybe that was all irrelevant...

I discovered the alt-leftMouse thing after I'd made my original post; it does provide a workaround so I can see the whole window, which is nice.

I'll look into KDE's settings to change the initial geometry, although the program running to provide the window in question is 3rd party and somewhat a work in progress; I'm told resizing and scrolling are 'in the works'.
