Laptop stops in GRUB - Kubintu

I've got a kubuntu dapper 6.0 on my lapto. No windows isntallation, but played a bit with wine last night. Now I can't boot. I only get GRUB on the screen. Is it possible to reinstall kubuntu, without touching what is on the machine? Or do I have to manually edit conf-files?

First of all, I'd suggest looking at the grub problem, before doing anything else. What does it do? does it show an error? If yes, which one?Without touching what is on the machine, no. Without touching your /home yes, but its easily done only if its on a separate partition, otherwise you can't reinstall from scratch (format root partition).

In any case, before reinstalling kubuntu, try reinstalling only GRUB (I believe there's a utility on the disk to do that)

I assume you're not getting any error codes, etc..

Try googling for "Super Grub Disk".... I've never used it, but several here speak highly of it.

Every Linux Live CD is as good as the "Super Grub Disk" if you know how to use it.

In this case I would just restore Grub using a Live CD, even the Kubuntu installation CD can do that job. Dteails as per Task B4 or B5 of the last link in my signature.

Let me explain why a Linux Live CD is as good if not better than the Super Grub Disk which is just a bootable Grub disk with utilities thrown in.

When one has an unbootable Linux A in the hard disk and boots up a Linux B with a Live CD one can mount the root partition of Linux A, "change root" into it and works "inside" Linux A with the kernel provided by Linux B.

This combination, of using Linux B's kernel with the Linux A's BASH shell, can solve any problem with Lilo or Grub. It is the modern universal method that can be used to rescue any Linux.
