Laptop running very hot

I have Fedora Core installed on my laptop and it is running incredibly hot compared to what it did with Windows...anything I can do to make it cool down a bit. The fan runs constantly--fairly noisy. I don't want to turn off the fan or slow down the fan, the fact that it is on means that the system is just too hot...how/what process can I cancel on startup?

Thanks,
djljjm

The power mgmt is started as a serviice. check

/sbin/chkconfig --list | grep acpi
and
/sbin/chkconfig --list | grep apm

You can also check in the /proc directory which has all the run time information.
if there is a directory like /proc/acpi, then ACPI is running.
if /proc/apm then APM is working.
