Also it sounds like you have a newer rig and have not run sensors-detect yet. That might be all you need to resolve a battery issue. Crosses fingers on this post.

I installed LXDE and booted the system. Everything works flawlessly now. The problem was hiding somewhere in Gnome (gdm?). I still got to install inxi and follow the rest of the commands, which I would do in the weekend. Thanks for all your help again.

Thanks. This happened with Ubuntu and Mint live boots too. As it seems this problem is related to Nvidia graphics. When I enable Nvidia in BIOS, system shuts down when I try to play videos on MPlayer (LXDE). However, Gnome cannot handle it even when Nvidia is disabled in BIOS and nouveau blacklisted. I'm going to try everything I can in the weekend. I prefer Gnome over LXDE.
