Also it sounds like you have a newer rig and have not run sensors-detect yet. That might be all you need to resolve a battery issue. Crosses fingers on this post.

In Debian Synaptic Package Manager you can search on ACPI and get a list of tools that help you monitor and initiate.

I installed LXDE and booted the system. Everything works flawlessly now. The problem was hiding somewhere in Gnome (gdm?). I still got to install inxi and follow the rest of the commands, which I would do in the weekend. Thanks for all your help again.

Cool Beans. You make wonder if you did a md5sum check of your Debian iso. A corrupted iso download does some hinky things after a install.

So good to hear everything worked out using Lubuntu.

Thanks. This happened with Ubuntu and Mint live boots too. As it seems this problem is related to Nvidia graphics. When I enable Nvidia in BIOS, system shuts down when I try to play videos on MPlayer (LXDE). However, Gnome cannot handle it even when Nvidia is disabled in BIOS and nouveau blacklisted. I'm going to try everything I can in the weekend. I prefer Gnome over LXDE.
