Unhappy LAN problem , can you help?

Can you please help me set up a LAN?. Can't export !

I am using RH9
I have connected my laptop to a PC server by means of a hub. I can ping both ways the two machines. However, when I try to export a directory from my PC (home/neptune/temp) so that it can be mounted on the laptop I get this message:

neptune@localhost neptune]$ /usr/sbin/exportfs -a -v
exporting tycho:/temp
exporting tycho:/temp to kernel

tycho:/temp: Operation not permitted
exportfs: could not open /var/lib/nfs/etab for locking
exportfs: can't lock /var/lib/nfs/etab for writing
exportfs: could not open /var/lib/nfs/xtab for locking
exportfs: can't lock /var/lib/nfs/xtab for writing

Can you please help me set up my home LAN?
Thank you

You need to configure NFS (Network File Share) in order to do this. There is an excellent howto on the subject. Follow the guide step by step and you should have no problem. be aware that NFS is inherently insecure and if you use broadband you should have a firewall installed to give some protection.

Thank you for your advice. I have configured automatically the NFS according to the instructions of the Linux Bible C.Negus. There is no internet connection so I have disabled firewall protection. Can you figure out what the problem is by reading the message I get? (see previous message). If you are busy thank you very much anyway.

exportfs: can't lock /var/lib/nfs/etab for writing
exportfs: could not open /var/lib/nfs/xtab for locking
exportfs: can't lock /var/lib/nfs/xtab for writing
the line operation not permitted to me means that there is a problem with /etc/exports. Have you configured the mount point under temp?

# device mountpoint fs-type options dump fsckorder

master.foo.com:/temp /mnt/temp nfs rw 0 0

have you checked whether the files /var/lib/nfs/etab /xtab exist?

Here is my /etc/exports as an example;

# /etc/exports: the access control list for filesystems which may be exported
# to NFS clients. See exports(5).
/var 192.168.0.3/255.255.255.0(ro)
/usr 192.168.0.3/255.255.255.0(ro)
/debs 192.168.0.3/255.255.255.0(ro)

check nfs is working by doing rpcinfo -p and compare that with the reference I gave.

You are very kind. I have spent days on that problem and what really annoys me is that I have followed Negus's advice to the letter and I don't have my LAN. I will try to read your howto and get back to you for further advice, soon. I am really running out of patience with that LAN my friend!
Thank you for your time. Back to you soon.
Theodore
