I'm a newb, but I think that in order to communicate with windows type os, you need to install samba on linux

No you should be able to ping other win machines on your network anyway, is netmask and broadcast setup correctly for your eth card? Check your firewall also, there are many things that could be wrong. Can you ping the linux box from other win boxes? Maybe its a bad cable?
I know i wasnt much of a help, but i hope that'll give you some clue on where the problem might be...

Lan

About that prob , i can ping w2k, this means that is not a cable connecton, or a firewall prob.

About that Samba ??? What does it do ????? in the lan ????

Samba is a file and print server.
So you can set up a file / print server on your Red Hat and your Windows machines can print to it and access files you have shared.

Hope this helps.

If you can ping other machines then you are "Connected" What the problem is, is that you have not setup any type of common protocols. You do need to setup SAMBA. It is a package that allows you to create the common ground work between LINUX and Windows for file/printer sharing. You can go to www.samba.org to download the newest version. There is alot of documentation as well. READ IT CAREFULLY to understand the process. Also because SAMBA can be difficult to setup you should try the FRONTEND software for SAMBA called WEBMIN. It has a very nice GUI to allow you to setup not only SAMBA but alot of other applications on your LINUX machine. Things to setup...SAMBA app....Users on the LINUX machine...UNIX user passwords.....Permissions....File shares... These are a few thing to make sure you setup properly.I just spent about 6 months to get Samba working and I am still trying to figure out many things about it. Have fun
