Would ytalk work for what you're doing? Not entirely sure what a LAN messenger is, but that's what came to mind...

Hi,

I know KDE3.3 will integrate a LAN messenger...
about pwlib: http://freshmeat.net/projects/pwlib/

Well its a messenger to communicate with another computer using the same messenger (like yahoo). But in this case without using the net only thru the LAN.

I work in a city administration; there are departments here experimenting with Linux. They are expecting to incorporate Akeni, but I'm not sure how free it is... as in beer and freedom.

As chat application for Linux, I know gaim and chatzilla which is part of mozilla project...

Gaim is brilliant for MSN, ICQ and that kind of protocols, but I have never been satisfied with the IRC part. XChat, the old classic, would still be my recommendation.

For IRC, chatzilla is quite good, and it has the advantage that if you've mozilla already installed, you probably have chatzilla too :)
