Lackof GCC?

I just installed ubuntu and I am scared! Ive used redhat before but it appears that I have none of the basic Linux things. These include

GCC
RPM

and etcetera. I cant get anything compiled without
GCC and can't get GCC compiled without GCC. I cant extract RPMS without RPM... its very painful... please help me out.

Ubuntu comes from Debian and therefor does not use RPM. Chances are you will not need it anyway.

On your Gnome panel, go to:
Applications > Add/Remove. You can install and deinstall software there.
If you did not find what you were looking for there, go (on your Gnome panel) to:
System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager. You can install and deisntall packages there.
