It's hard to know what the problem is without more information. Why not try removing KDM and GDM (I presume this is what you were referring to when you said GNM?? ) and then reinstalling KDM?

1 sudo apt-get --purge remove kdm gdm
2 sudo apt-get update
3 sudo apt-get install kdm

Good luck!!
