From the command line try to reconfigure the xserver. At the command input:sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

This should start a text based wizard. Answer questions that you can. If there are any you can't then go with the given default answer. If at first you don't succeed then try again. If all else fails choose VESA of the driver.

linuxnoob0075 01-02-2008 12:38 PM

It can knock out your video card, and it this supports 3D, compiz. You may need to reinstall your video card and/or compiz.

One easier way of downloading installing the correct nvidia or ati video card in *buntu is to use the Envy script from http://albertomilone.com/wordpress/

linuxnoob0075 01-02-2008 02:16 PM

um...if i do this what will happen?

linuxnoob0075 01-02-2008 02:26 PM

um...when i installed it it opened and it didnt work
it said that there were some missing dependencies, and when i clicked yess to install them, it game me a screen that said dkms
please install them manually

arochester 01-02-2008 06:57 PM

Try connecting to the internet, opening a terminal and inputing
Quote:

sudo apt-get install dkms

linuxnoob0075 01-02-2008 09:27 PM

ok....it worked and then i installed the nvidia driver
but....my compiz fusion still isnt working

arochester 01-03-2008 08:40 AM

Try running (Alt+F2)
Quote:

compiz --replace
If it is not there you need to reinstall it.

linuxnoob0075 01-03-2008 10:29 AM

yeah

compiz --replace worked

but whenever my compiz is on there is a window called adept notifier, its just a little green ball, and when i try to close it it still is there
what do i do to get rid of it?

arochester 01-03-2008 11:15 AM

I know the problem but I don't know the answer. Maybe someone else can help. Can it be maximised/minimised? What happens when you RIGHT click on it? Can it be closed?

linuxnoob0075 01-03-2008 12:23 PM

it cant be maximized or minmized
when right clicked it give a quit option and when clicked says if it needs to open next time and i said no....next time 'll try but if it doesnt work then ill come back
