Here's where you're going to need to get a book and read and do some extesive searching. There are tons of books to read and resources on the Internet that will teach you Linux. You are not going to get anywhere very fast by posting to a forum and asking someone to walk you through each step on the journey. Linux is NOT like Windows so don't expect it to be anything like. In a lot of ways it will be like starting all over from scratch.

Start by reading your distribution documentation on how to install software or website on. Kubuntu uses apt on the command line and may also have a GUI interface for getting and installing packages. They will likely have a Wine package for that distro.

All you need to do to install wine is either:
1.) Go to a terminal, and type 'sudo apt-get install wine'. Type your password.
2.) Go to K -> System -> Adept Manager, type your password, search for wine, click 'install package', and click 'Commit Changes'.

OK, kubuntu is being stupid haha. i cant get wine to work. Winehq stuff doesn't install because it isn't he right system i guess... it doens't say Kubuntu. i tried installing java using both an install thing and also that sunjava thing but it didn't work. there was a java thing in the adept manager but it was grey and in the background so i couldn't select it.

can you help!!!!

as u know i am new to Kubuntu so can u give me step by step instructions?

PS. is wine an emulator like i know other emulators to be. i know some emulators like arcade ones run everything in a little box. or would it be more like once its installed i could install and run things like i would on a windows OS?

I need step by step instructions for Java installation and wine.

Thanks

Huh? What happened when you tried to install wine, and which method did you use to install it? I think you need to be more specific. As for Java, see this:

It's not an emulator in a technical sense, and you won't generally see the applications running inside a parent window. Other than looking out of place, an application you run with Wine will be in its own window as if it were a native application. So to answer the question, it's like the latter - install and run like you're using Windows. If you want to, there is a setting which allows you to run applications with wine inside of a "desktop" window, though it doesn't resemble a Windows desktop.

yeah sorry that was kind of vague.. how can you help me fix things if i dont tell u exactly whats wrong..

here's what i have done:

downloaded wine 0.9.30 from: http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Syste...Wine-148.shtml

after downloading the file of one of their mirors i was left with a .tar file which i extracted to my desktop with ark (the archiving thing). i was left with a file named wine 0.9.30 on my desktop full of random files.

after doing that i ran adept package manager. i searched wine and was left with 4 packages; libwine, libwine-dev, wine, and wine-dev. all of which say not installed and no change.

when i hit request install it says BREAK (Install) under request. i can only select one at a time. if i click request install on more than one package, the newly click package says break install, the others go back to uninstalled and no change, if that makes any sence.. haha.

so i figured i would start from the top and try libwine.
when i click apply changes it says

(could not commit changes)
There was an error committing changes. There was possibly a problem downloading some packages, or else the commit would break packages.

Im not sure if this helps but::::

FILE DESCIPITIONS

LIBWINE AND LIBIWINE-DEV SAY - Microsoft windows compatability layer (dummy package)

Wine says - M W C L - (binary emulator and library)
Wine-dev says M W C L - development files

any help on installing wine?

ok ive done some things now...

1.) Java

- i followed the instrucutions on that page you gave me someguy, i found that very helpful, i would have never guessed what it told me to do about the multiverse thing. i did that and searched for updates or whatever and some things were installed automatically. Java is now working as i follow the instructions on how to do that. it has a few more min to install but anyway i cant see that going wrong now.

(ps. i have now got that working, just got wine to go. thanks for the help so far. ill look into it as well)

2.) Wine

- after doing that multiverse thing i was given a new thing when i searched wine. i was given winefish. i installed that with no problem now i am left with this wine issue..

libwine and libwine-dev still will only switch between BREAK (Install) and no change if i request install on more that one thing.

wine wine and wind-dev however, if i click wine-dev first then request to install wine, wine-dev's request goes to install and wine goes to the same old brake(install) thing. this still gives me the same error as mentioned in my last post. wine-dev will only switch to install if i click request install one wine. if there is no change to wine.. wine-dev stays on brake install.

i tried doing this

1.) click request install on wine-dev. (it says brake install)
2.) click request install on wine. (wine-dev switches to install and wine switches to brake install - giving me an error still)
3.) click remove changes on wine. ( wine goes to no change and wine-dev goes back to brake install)

moral of the story.... it gives me an error saying the same thing as i mentioned in my previous thread.
