Exclamation Kubuntu 8.04=23.446317] Kernel Panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init ![SOLVED]

Hi all,

I upgraded my P4 from Kubuntu 7.10 Hardy to 8.04 Gutsy and all was working fine untill today.

All of a sudden I get :
23.446123] EIP: [<c01d7397>] sysfs_find_dirent+0x17/0x30 SS:ESP 0068:f7c33e2
23.446266] ---[ end trace e7f801de8ab0963c ]---
23.446317] Kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init !

*On a second attempt I get:
Starting up ...
24.063081] incomplete literal tree
24.063131] invalid compressed format (err=1)
24.064933] Kernel panick - not syncing: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

None of the post I found really made sense. Can anyone please help in plain english?

Specs = 2,8Ghz P4, 1Gb Ram, Dual boot with 2 hard drives, 1 = Vista, 2 = 8.04 Gutsy.

Thanks.

This question has been asked and answered many times in this forum. Use the web site search to look for the following phrases:
not syncing
attempted to kill init

The problem is that the kernel does not have the driver required to mount the system partition.
