kpanel disappeared
 

the kde panel disappeared when i logged in as root, but fine for other users.
what could be done to get it back?

Make sure that it is not just hidden at the edges.

If you can run a command, try typing:
kicker

i think something worse here, since the respond to the command "kicker" was:

kicker: crashHandler called

Not sure what is wrong, as I am trying to replicate the error, but can't get what you get.

The only other thing would be to try a search on google using typing what you see out.

Also, try to load up KDE's control center as root, and then goto look&feel, panel and try changing the settings for it. The command is:
kcontrol

I'm getting the same problem that you were, with the kpanel disappearing on login, except for me it only happens when I login as a user. It works fine when I login as root.

I'm running the latest redhat...

Has anyone found a resolution to this problem?

i think i've figured out a solution, although it is a little bit tricky and goofy. at least it worked on my linux box.

like CragStar said, go to the kcontrol->look & feel->panel->applet, select the entry: load only trusted applets internal. and start your "kicker".

if this still doesn't work, right click your taskbar (i mean taskbar, not the panel), modify the preferences, unselect some features of the taskbar (in my case, i disabled "show window list button" and "group similar tasks"). try if the panel could come back.

i think this is the bug of kde. hope not in the coming kde3.

No, I was only wondering if you had found a complete solution or working solution. There are bound to be ppl in the future with same problem - I just like to know things. Knowledge is power and all that.....

I also had this problem..it also happened for user one time, when I installe denlightenment, but I straightened that out. I went over to gnome and reset some kde stuff...I was glad I had installed both desktops.

Today, I had this problem in KDE 3.5. I had gone into Configure Panel, Hiding, and I clicked on "Raise when the pointer touches the screen's: Top Edge." I hit "apply" and the panel disappeared -- permanently.

I did stuff that did not work, like rebooting. When KDE comes up, the panel raises up for a second, then hides itself. Moving the mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen would not raise it.

kicker would not help, because the panel was running, it was just permanently hidden.

I googled this:

I did not anything helpful. (I did find this tread.)

I finally discovered a solution. By right clicking on the desktop, the right click menu appeared and konsole is one option. I chose that, then typed kcontrol and hit enter. That brought up the KDE Control Center. I could then go into Desktop, Panels, Hiding and turn off "Raise when the pointer touches the screen's: Top Edge." My panel was back.

I hope someone finds this helpful.
