konqueror works, firefox doesn't

Thanks all in advance for any help offered. To make a long story short, I tried changing the dns server in /etc/resolve.conf, then firefox could not access the web. I changed it back immediately to the original dns server and still no access. So I rebooted the system and the system would not boot, it hung on "starting system log". In interactive startup I disabled the service log and cups as they were both hanging up the system.
So the problem is basicaly, konqueror works, I can ping out, synaptic works, firefox doesn't access the web. "cups" And system logs are still hanging the system.
Any clues to what I did and how to get them working again ???

Thanx all so much
