Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Hi, I am running Red Hat 7.2 on a Intel P3, 550Mhz. I installed only a few days ago, and have been initially playing around in Gnome and all seems to work fine. Today I decided to try KDE for a change and I have hit a problem.
When I try to open Konqueror to navigate the file system, the icon appears in the bar at the bottom of the screen, and my pointer flashes as if it's doing something, but nothing happens. After about 30 seconds the icon on the bottom bar vanishes and it acts like I nothing has happened.
I tried looking at the permissions for Konqueror, and I noticed that the Exec check box is unchecked for all three user types. However, I also noticed these same persmissions for other programs on the bar which open up fine. So maybe this is nothing.
It's probably something pretty simple and obvious, but my Linux knowledge is limited, and I couldn't find other postings related to this issue. Nautilus under Gnome runs fine.
Also, some games that came bundled with Red Hat 7.2 (such as Chromium) run incredibly slowly on my system under both Gnome and KDE. As I can get pretty resource intensive games to run under Windows with no lag I figure it's probably not my hardware. Are there some settings I've missed that will increase performance under Red Hat?
