Knoppix USB boot - problem with internal SATA drive

Hello all,
I was able to boot Knoppix 5.1.1 from an USB drive, but the internal SATA hard drive was not mounted correctly by Knoppix. Please help.

During boot, Knoppix did recognize USB drive as /dev/sdb, internal SATA drive as /dev/sda. Now the problem: after booted into Knoppix, mounted USB drive become /dev/sda1, which was wrong. My internal SATA drive's 1st partition could not be accessed, since /dev/sda1 pointed to USB drive. But SATA drive's 2nd partition was OK as /dev/sda2. I could not unmount /dev/sda1 since Knoppix thinks it is in use (it is actually USB, so it is in use!).

I guess there is a bug in Knoppix 5.1.1. If there is a work around, please point me to the right direction. Thanks!

I have Ubuntu on a stick

Do you want Knoppix, which is a little old. The new Kubantu 8.10 or Ubuntu 8.10 might do better. If you are booting from a USB stick they have a very simple, quick installation, with space for saved settings and files.

Thanks! But I really want to use Knoppix because of its great capability in auto detect hardware. This stick will be used as rescue tool not a daily OS.

Thanks!

I am guessing here.
At boot prompt use the cheatcode
knoppix bootfrom=/dev/sdb/K*.iso/

or use the file where the iso is to free up sda.

Hello.

I've resolved this problem in this mode:

1. command:

ls -lha /dev/sda1

result:

brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 1 2008-12-13 11:37 /dev/sda1

2. command:

sudo mknod /dev/hd1 b 8 1

3. command:

mkdir /home/knoppix/Desktop/hd1

4. command:

sudo mount /dev/hd1 /home/knoppix/Desktop/hd1

After, you can operate with standard "ntfs" kernel module ("sudo modprobe ntfs") or with ntfs-3g.

Ciao.
