I have just created a Knoppix 3.7 CD and can boot from it OK. I have 2 disks with 4 partitions. hda1 and hda2 are both NTFS.
hdb5 is NTFS but hdb6 is ??32. I used Knoppix to create this partition as a Linux partition and then tried to boot using
knoppix home=/dev/sda6 or sdb6 and it can not find the partition. Y did a retry but failed, n did nothing so power off/on.
I tried knoppix home=scan and this just ignored the option and completed boot from CD.
knoppix home=/dev/hdb6 also did the same.
knoppix home=/dev/hdb6/knoppix.img came up with some error message then completed the boot from cd.

I intend to use this system to learn C++ embedded programming and pascal programming so need hard disk space.

Why such an old Knoppix?
There are better suited distro's for programming, but you want a current distro.

Willing to try different distro's or you like 3.7?

Thanks for your help. I have downloaded both TinyCore and Knioppix V6.
I probably need to learn more before I ask more questions.
