Knoppix File Sharing HELP!

Greetings!

I am running knoppix 3.3 and am trying to share the contents of a Hard Disk (/dev/hdd1) on a windows network. Specifically, I am trying to transfer the contents of the HDD (several GB) to a windows XP machine.

How do I do this?

Is there a URL where this is explained?

to browse a windows network share from Knoppix use the smbclient command

man smbclient for details.

on the first option, I believe that there is a "quick" menu item in knoppix that allows you to start the samba service, and share all mounted volumes... browse around the menus, im sure its there (did it last night at home with knoppix.... dont have access to that machine now, sorry

Thanks Peacedog. I can now see my Knoppix filesystem from my windows system, but when I try to access anything, I get a password dialogue. I've tried the root password (which I had set in the instructions at that URL) and have had no success. I've also tried some obvious defaults. (nothing, password, etc)

What is my password? How do I change it?

Not running a firewall. The entire network is behing a NAT box, but no local/personal firewalls installed and WINXP firewall is NOT enabled.

When I click on share "hdd1", a password dialogue pops up....

Username is greyed out and cannot be changed "KNOPPIX/Guest"
I enter the root password (I had set it to "none") and press enter.

The password box blinks and comes back with the password field blank.

No error message. No other information.

Ok. Got it.

Clicking on "hdd1" share doesnt work.

But clicking on "root" share works fine and I can browse to /mnt/hdd1

Seems odd. But working is working.

Thanks!

glad you got it going. just to explain, hdd1 is not shared from your smb.conf file. root is

path = /

so anything under root is shared. it's the same thing as if you share your c: in windows but not my documnets. you can still get to my documents from c: , but, you can't connect directly to it. hope that sheds some light, again, glad your up and running.
