knoppix and Md5 sum ???
 

This post starts with a little OUTBURST.

Knoppix - Isn't it just FSCKING magic? (please excuse the expletive).

and how do I check the Md5 sum for the 3.2 version that I downloaded last night ??

But to continue, I have been having major, major snags getting audio cd's to play under debian "Sarge". I actually managed to cure the problem with an idea posted by "adz".

But last night, I was in the absolute pit's of despair and frustration when I remembered that a good while ago, a friend from the LUG gave me a burned copy of Knoppix 3.1 and I thought "hey, knoppix is debian based, I wonder if that works"?

So in went the disc, and "bugger me with the rough end of a pineapple", not only did it work, but I did the tiny config for my network card and i had net access, told the kscd version to look at /dev/cdrom1 and I had sound.

It is CONSIDERABLY better than the config I've currently got set up for my debian (and quite close to my mandrake install). I'm seriously thinking of either binning the debian and putting knoppix on my hard drive (as it apparently becomes a "normal" debian install when you do a hard disc install).

Anyway, enough drivel if someone could let me know about how I check the Md5 sum of the download.

You need to download the md5sum from the iso site. Then go to www.md5summer.org (I think) download the program and run it against your iso. The result will give the md5sum as reported by your download. Check it against the md5sum you downloaded and, if they match, you can burn the iso and install from it.

Have you tried the Slackwared Live CD? Equally amazing!

I tried it after I downloaded it again, but the little swine kept freezing my windows install (I haven't mastered burning disc's in anything linux yet). So I binned it, and zoomed over to PCworld in Hove to pick up some more CDR's just incase the second download was crap as well.

It wasn't. I burned the disc and booted it. As per, it booted fine and I sat having a play - I must say, VVV impressive.

Try K3b in KDE (it's included in KNOPPIX 3.1). You can't fail with that ... :p

I'm still getting over how impressive knoppix is. If as I suspect, I can do a hard drive install without loosing much, if any, of the settings knoppix detects, then that would make it nearly the same as doing an up to date mandrake install - but I'm "not counting my chickens" just yet.

Because if it can "go to rat shit", then it usually does, well, for me anyway!:D

I didn't mean to be nasty or rude. K3b is really easy to use (very much like nero under Windows) and very logically structured. Before using it the first time you have to run the K3B-Setup, though. :)

Nero and Easy CD creator make very nice coasters if you don't use them very often!

You need to click (in Easy CD, I think Nero is very similar) file, create cd from image and then browse to the .iso file. It took me 3 goes to get that right!
