Knoppix 6.0.1 "Run"

Just got Knoppix 6.0.1

Select Run from menu bring up command line.

The following brings up nothing

Code:
 fdisk -l /dev/hda

even entering the following on the command line

Code:
man fdisk
brings up nothing.

What am I doing wrong to execute commands?

If you're trying to partition the hard drive, it's probably /dev/sda

fdisk commands need to be run as root. Don't know how that's used in Knoppix, is knoppix installed or a Live CD?

dw85745:

For "manual" command to serve you, the knopix must also install it. Try install knoppix into the harddrive partition.

As to your fdisk -l command try run it as root and also note that the drive might be named as /dev/sda or /dev/sda1 (2 or 3).

Hope this helps.

Thanks all for input.

yancek -- yes Knoppix is LiveCD.
My assuming is command line is root????

malekmustag -- Since Live CD, would think man would be available.
Even the help button on GUI bring up nothing.
my drives are /dev/hda (not serial, but noway you
would know this)

Wish there was Knoppix usage manual on line?

Not necessarily. I think Knoppix used to have a 'root shell' but don't know if it still does. Googled this and I believe you need to type at the command prompt: passwd root, you should be prompted to enter a password for root. This only works until re-boot of course if you are using Live CD. Might try sudo fdisk -l. Haven't used Knoppix for quite a while so I'm not really sure.

In knoppix "live CD", to become root, you just use su
Like this:
su -
That is su <space> <minus sign> <Press RETURN>
No password is required.

To cease being root, type exit or <CTRL><d>

FWIW:

Found that 6.0 has a terminal emulator.

Don't believe terminal is on desktop initially (lower left icons)

To place terminal icon on desktop I:
Quote:
Right clicked desktop
Advanced Tab on Window (dialog box)
Terminal (combo Box) --> I selected gnome
OK Button
Menu File
File:Exit

===============
Double Click Terminal Icon
Brought up Terminal at root.

tried man command and fdisk -l (both worked)
