Knoppix 3.9 not showing Windows long filenames

I have a laptop that's running Windows98 First Edition. It's a Compaq Presario 1256. We purchased a new computer and need to transfer the data files from the laptop to the new machine. I would like to use a USB flash drive, but can't find drivers for Win98 FE (only Second Edition).

I was hoping that Knoppix would be the solution. Knoppix started fine on the laptop, but the filenames are all in the 8.3 format. I really don't want to have to rename all of my files.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Can you type mount and post the output? It might be mounting the drive incorrectly.

What area should I go into to type the mount command? The software boots up into a desktop environment.

Output of mount

Here's the output of mount. I redirected it to a file, copied it to the USB drive and then opened it in Windows Notepad, so the formatting may be somewhat incorrect. I think I've separated the lines correctly.

/dev/root on / type ext2 (rw)
/dev/hdc on /cdrom type iso9660 (ro)
/dev/cloop on /KNOPPIX type iso9660 (ro)
/ramdisk on /ramdisk type tmpfs (rw,size=117136k)
/UNIONFS on /UNIONFS type unionfs (rw,noatime,dirs=/ramdisk=rw:/KNOPPIX=ro)
/UNIONFS/dev/pts on /UNIONFS/dev/pts type devpts (rw)
/proc/bus/usb on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw,devmode=0666)
automount(pid1786) on /mnt/auto type autofs (rw,fd=4,pgrp=1786,minproto=2,maxproto=4)
/UNIONFS/dev/uba1 on /mnt/uba1 type vfat (ro,nosuid,nodev,umask=000,uid=1000,gid=1000)

After looking around some more, I noticed that only SOME of the files reverted back to 8.3 format. Some DO have the long filenames intact!

Hope this helps!
