knoppix 3.8 hdinstall...

I just gave up on that and now am highly concerned about how i go about things this time....but, as i've said, i gave up, and have now DBAN'ed the disk --- fresh and clean.
I have a sense of urgency in that i must get one of these two old celeron 333/366 junkers rolling, and i loathe to force someone into 98 servitude... I want to give it to someone who needs a lot of point and click, as one can achieve with pretty kde/gnome on a nice livecd, but on the hd, so faster and more stable with use of optical drive for other things (duh)

My friend is out of town and while he is gone i can use his lan to get this worked out, but up until today i thought i had it made. at the last minute, my "windoze" mentality led me to trash the disk...

I installed the Cebit knoppix 3.8 on the 366 w/ 256m ram and 2g linux 400mb swap and 1.6g FAT32 (to hold out for XP...) The install seemed to go rather smoothly, without much interaction, as I'd hoped since LIVE it seemed to recognize EVERYTHING...

when i rebooted to shell i thought "just run kde..."
so i typed kde nothin. no x? startx....
errors. no screens. (did i mention reading and reading and reading and reading? and reading? and trying to understand what depended on what and where to start? and reading?
apt-get tutorials, dpkg tutorials...

i booted to the livecd and saved my config file...
booted with myconfig=scan
still no x.
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install x-window-system

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
went through that configuration, done, still no x

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP.
(sorry for yelling. ) my friend will be home easter and i won't have tiiiiiiime.....

1) how can i save (and use) the configuration file from the live ramdisk to the hd install?
2) When i install knoppix to the hd, is that just a stripped down debian?
3) what is the easiest to use gui for older hardware like this that readily supports most wifi devices

I stress that this box is going to an older friend who has trouble understanding where to click in *windows*, and is not apt to mess things up or configure anything himself. simple email and office apps for him....but i need the wifi and stuff for the meantime...

At this point the drive is clean, 4gigs, all waiting for the best distro to make it work for a while longer. (i have all 5 suse 9.2 cds, but i think they are bootlegged, pclinuxOS, DSL, Kanotix, knoppix 3.6,3.8, SLAX, Peanut, zen gnome,Beatrix, Vector5soho, Phlak, Dyne-bolic....)
?

If it won't boot into X , there is probably an issue with the video card or monitor.
Have you tried the free version of Xandros? It's a quick install, has good hardware detection and is very newbie friendly.
You can also use the debian repositories to get a huge software base.
One big drawback on the freebie is the cdrecord speed is locked down to unuseable slowness. That is to encourage you to buy a version which then would not have that problem.

Mind you, I'm still a Redhat/Fedora guy but sometimes I look for stuff that doesn't require babysitting and tutoring from me.
