kinda good linux for a 486

where can I find a fairly light version of linux to install on a 486 with 32 mb of ram and 512mb of hard disk space ?

Probably Slackware, Debian, or Gentoo. Gentoo takes quite a bit of time to install though, even on a fast system.

Oh, I just came across an interesting site you might want to look at: Mini Distros

I have Slackware 3.4 (I think kernel 2.0.12) working with XF86 and an old version of IceWM on a 486 SX/25 Compaq Contura notebook with 12MB of RAM and 120MB HD (8MB partitioned as swap). I had to install it from floppies which took forever. Try to make sure all of your hardware is from the same era if you're going "back in time" with regard to kernel versions and distros cuz obviously nobody supports hardware which don't exist yet.

I feel like going for slackware 3.4. Anymore sugestions?

upgrade the kernel when you get it installed.

Good luck

oh yeah but keep it in the 2.0 series unless you're feeling adventurous, but keep it incremental... try 2.0.(latest) then 2.2.(latest) etc....
