Killing X ?


Hi,

I tried to kill X in order to install new graphic kernel (nvidia). But each time, it came back by itself !!

What can I do ?? Which deamon should I kill ???

Thx a lot... I will become crazy

Sounds like you have a graphical login set up.

Most distros you can type "init 3" as root to kill the graphical log in.

Next time you could also try

killall X

Typing 'init 3' actually switches you into a command line runlevel...the end result is the same (X won't be running). It's an important distinction to know though.

Most init scripts that I've encountered stick *DM on a loop, so if X dies it restarts after a couple of seconds. If that was the case then killing X would just have it spring back after a moment.
