keyrings?

Hello,

debian-keyring, ubuntu-keyring, gnome-keyring

I had some problem with keyring packages during distro upgrade process.
I assume that these packages have something to do with security.
I also get advices to use lines like below to solve my problems.

gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 40976EAF437D05B5
gpg --armor --export 40976EAF437D05B5 | sudo apt-key add -

Can anybody here explain me please how the whole system of xxx-keyrings packages working? Or just point me somewhere where is some good HOW-TO.
I would like to more understand this.

Thanks in advance

M.
