Keymapping problems on a laptop

Allright. Im a linux newb (even though I'm a M$ certified XP technician) so please be simple with your directions as I am new to this form of operating system.

I just purchased an older Toshiba 2100 CDS and installed Mandrake 9.1 on it. Ran into a problem with the PCMCIA cards but already fixed that. Now it will run fine but I have to connect an external keyboard to the system because it doesn't recognize the laptop's keyboard. For example, if I were to push the "a" button, "ai" appears on the screen. Another example is the "l" button which puts out "{{]l/" and so on...

So, I know the problem is with the keymapping because the laptop works fine with Win2k. All I need is some advice on how to create a keymap so I don't have to use the external keyboard.

Thanks
