Keyboard shortcuts in dialog windows

Is there a way to enable keyboard shortcutting in (gtk) dialog windows?

.. or is it just disadvantage of xmms that in the "open file dialog" I can't jump to file or directory starting with "M" by pressing the "M"-key etc.

I have the same problem in gftp and some other applications too.

It's really annoying to search a particular file by scrolling with the mouse.
