Keyboard layouts cannot be added in Ubuntu 8.04

Hi,
I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 and have some problem with the keyboard layouts.

I want to add Pashto layout, so when I click add and choose Afghanistan > Pashto or Pashto OLPC, it gives an error message and I cannot proceed.

It is only for Pashto (all the layouts there in the Afghanistan category) and not for other languages, so I want to know how can I fix this and start writing Pashto?

The error message given is:

"
Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
10400090

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
"

and the results of the above commands are:

- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB:

"
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "us", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "us", "", "grp:alts_toggle"
"

- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd

"
layouts = [us,af ps]
model =
options = [grp grp:alts_toggle]
overrideSettings = true
"

Any help would highly be appreciated,

Thanks

The installation command:

sudo apt-get install language-pack-ps

Result:

[sudo] password for zabeehkhan:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

language-pack-ps is already the newest version.

What happens if you edit xorg.conf manually (do make a backup first).

Code:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
Next edit xorg.conf (sudu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf) and change your Option "XkbLayout" in "XkbLayout" "ps".

EDIT: If this causes X11 to crash, just move the old one back:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Tried it... the same error is given again.

I also filed a bug against it in launchpad... you may confirm it too .. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ig/+bug/260647
