Could you be more explicit please, all the info you have is important. Does anything at all appear on your monitor, because i don't think it's a keyboard related issue.

scheepster Hi
The problem is on start up the screen shows the operating system to select or safe mode ect as this loads the last word at the bottom of the screen is Grub by this time the mouse and keyboard go dead. Regards Bern1 |
Q: What happens if you hold down <Ctl><Alt> and <F1> keys?
Does this give you a text mode login screen? Can you log in at that point? PS: I'm guessing the keyboard is probably "unresponsive" (vs. "dead"). One way to check is to see if <Num-click> or <Scroll-lock> changes the keyboard LED (if you happen to have a 101 or similar keyboard). Another way is to check <Ctl-Alt-F1>. PPS: Can you ping from another PC? Or boot from the install CD, to check the error logs on the hard disk? |
It isn't clear whether it is actually the grub bootloader or the OS that is failing. If you are able to operate grub, then perhaps you can use it to try to boot to a text-mode, single-user mode. You can do this by pressing any key (spacebar is usually a safe choice) when the grub menu comes up. Use the 'e' key to append-edit the word 'single' to the kernel command arguments. When you boot to the selected grub entry, it should then come up as single-use root, allowing you to diagnose and correct the problem.
If it is really a hardware problem, it would afflict any OS. Try using a known-good live CD such as Knoppix or a Ubuntu installation CD to boot the system. If that works, then pursue the problem as a software fault, or possibly a corrupted disk image. Come back here for further help when you've narrowed the problem down a bit more. --- rod. |
