kernel2.6.2 compile error

hi, I downloaded the kernel 2.6.1 and patched it up with patch 2.6.2 from kernel.org. made menuconfig, then make, make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install, make install, on make modules_install, it showed me "
can't stat source /boot/vmlinuz. all your loopback devices are in use, mkinitrd failed.

Also I found all usb modules are not installed. when i lsmod, it says QM_moduels can't be found or sth like that.
I did select almost everything in USB support in the menuconfig.
the rest seem to work fine. exept the bootup messages didn't show in the centre of the screen, i quess it has sth to do with the monitor setting.
anyone knows what went wrong?
thanks

ok first i am assuming you are using redhat cause of that error, so read this to view the things you must do before upgrading the kernel ...
second .. the steps you took are, well, kinda messed up ...
follow these steps to compile your new kernel ..

like i said the steps you took are all screwed up, and since you said you got a QM_Modules error i assume you didn't update them things specified in the link i provided ..
so start over, do make mrproper and start fresh ...

actually read what i just typed to you in my previous message
